REVIEW: Pootie x Nothing_neue – Rinse & Repeat

Pootie and Nothing_neue just dropped a new collaborative album titled Rinse and Repeat. Filled with ambitious narratives and grand production, the release is loosely based on a fictional car wash (peep the video below). Inspirations of the project range from: “movies of the 1970s, the aspirations of the working class, and our own individual influences” (quote from the artists).

There is a laid-back sense of camaraderie that drives Rinse and Repeat, a tangible feeling of chemistry between the two artists. Songs flow organically. Almost feels as if you’re in a corner of the car wash listening to the project being created firsthand. Pootie’s rhymes of top-shelf cuisine/vices, exotic destinations, and lifestyle routines brim with charisma. These verbal illustrations are complimented precisely by Nothing_neue’s dialed in-production. Almost feels more like a “score,” and this only bolsters the project’s narrative.

The producer is especially talented in matching both Pootie’s technical style AND the thematic elements at play lyrically. Genres fold over one another seamlessly. Pootie is straight rappin’ on some heavy “East Coast” sounding beats like ‘Muse’ and ‘Body Royal.’ Others are more lavish than gritty in the cases of ‘Assorted Cheeses,’ ‘Rinse & Repeat’ or ‘Wanna See U Shine.’

Nothing_neue plays more into his electronic sides on several joints too; the funky ‘Million Degreez’ or tranquil ‘Harry’s Interlude’ for example. Sounds are consistently unpredictable yet smooth in transition. Loved the outros on some of the tracks too…Nothing_neue’s ability to pivot mood in a matter of seconds is near masterful. Found his production to be rather intoxicating.

In its entirety, Rinse and Repeat is a strong body of work. The beats are gorgeous and the rhymes are confident without being over-the-top. Lines about the car wash were definitely some of my favorites.

“Catch me a swordfish, cook it a million degrees with fried orca, next day work the garage with old Otis”

Would definitely love to see more visuals too. Really respected the creativity that went into this project.
