Thundercat – Drunk
Thundercat is one of my favorite artists in all of modern music. He’s a top-tier bassist with a stellar discography, long-time FlyLo collaborator/Brainfeeder signee, and Grammy award winning collaborator WHO also influenced the iconic funk sound that helped make To Pimp a Butterfly the instant classic it is today. Pure talent, influence, consistency, uniqueness – all the bases are covered with this dude.
Time for the fun part. New music. Drunk is the latest LP from the Cali musician and also serves as his third official studio album. I was impressed immensely on first listen; loved pretty much every second of it. The Flying Lotus and Sounwave production, nasty hip hop features, short track lengths and classic T-Cat basslines came together in perfect unison. The same feeling has only continued since then and I’m just as impressed, if not more, than I was after my initial reaction. To be blunt, Drunk is 51 minutes of insanely good R&B/funk, impeccable craftsmanship and effortless swagger. February 2017 has already seen it’s fair share of great albums. Add this one to the list.
