Quelle Chris – Being You Is Great, I Wish I Could Be You More Often
Every now and then an MC describes their own work far better than I ever could. Here’s what Quelle had to say about this new album of his:
“It’s not an exuberant celebration of human life, nor is it a politicized condemnation of what got us here. It’s a record with beats that will make you bob your head and tap your feet, and clever lyrics that will make you laugh and scrunch your face. But most of all, it’s a record with a tremendous reserve of empathy. Something that captures the wonder and madness of being human. Something relentlessly honest. Something great.”
Honestly, that kinda sums it up for me too. Quelle, both as a producer and rapper, has a nack for making the off-kilter and unusual seem regular, or the norm. There’s a wacky, abstract aesthetic to the music – but it’s real. It’s disorganized. It’s human. And, most of the time, it’s quite enjoyable and relatable. They’re themes of confusion, frustration and celebration – all delivered through Chris’ nasally unique voice. Top it off with an all-star team of underground rap greats and you have one of the year’s most diverse, and ambitious, LPs.
